Salut Din Romania
(Houston SPCA) July 13, 2010 -- Cristina Lapis, President of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary is proud to report that Betsy The Bear and her new friend Monica are now sharing an enclosure at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary. Monica arrived at the sanctuary just a few months before Betsy and up until June 15th, the two bears lived in adjoining enclosures. Today, they are learning to coexist with one another and from what Cristina has observed, she says Monica is working very hard to win Betsy’s friendship.
Monica is sixteen years old and came from a less than reputable zoo and like Betsy, now finds comfort in this peaceful sanctuary located in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains. The World Society for the Protection of Animals will soon build a third enclosure for these two bears as they are too old to reside in the existing enclosures where the other groups have already been formed.
New photos of Betsy
And, in case you were wondering; Betsy is learning how to speak Romanian, "Salut Din Romania" means hello from Romania. You can read more about the adventures of Betsy the Bear, along with a video that outlines Betsy's whole story from rescue to release by clicking here.

(Houston SPCA) June 15, 2010 -- The Houston SPCA Cruelty Investigations Team assisted Precinct 1 Constables in the rescue of more than 160 dogs from a home in north Houston on Tuesday. Today, the Honorable Judge Dale Gorczynski, Pct. 1, Place 1 heard the case. The case was mediated and all dogs will remain in the custody of the Houston SPCA.
The dogs range in age from just a few days old to 14 years and are suffering from a variety of medical conditions ranging from highly contagious diseases to more minor issues like mange, dental problems and upper respiratory infections. None of the dogs are currently available for adoption because of their medical conditions.
Some of the dogs may be placed with our dedicated team of foster volunteers so they can be nursed back to health. Continue to check www.houstonspca.org for more information. As the dogs become available, their pictures will be “live” on the website.
