(HOUSTON February 27, 2009) The Houston SPCA has recently gone green by renovating the barn to help our farm animals and the earth. Now, we are going one step further by inviting the public to join us as we recycle old papers in order to raise money to help the thousands of homeless and abused animals we care for every year. Thanks to PaperRetriever.com, we have set up a large green and yellow recycling bin in the parking lot in front of our affiliate, the Wildlife Rehab and Education Center located just off of Old Katy Road. PaperRetriever.com is a community based recycling program designed for schools, nonprofit organizations and places of worship to help raise money. For your convenience, the bin will be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
When you drop off your old newspapers, magazines, shopping catalogs, junk mail, school papers, office papers, envelopes and phone books into the bin, the Houston SPCA will receive $5 dollars for every ton of paper. The money received from the recycled paper will then go back to the shelter to help the animals in need. Recycling just one ton of paper will save on the following resources:
4,102 kwh of electricity saved
60 Lbs less Air Pollution 7,000 gallons less water
390 gallons of oil saved
3.3 cubic yards of landfill diverted
17 fewer trees needed
Make sure nothing has been contaminated by keeping all food and beverages off of the paper you donate. Otherwise, the paper becomes greasy during the recycling process and unusable. Shredded paper can be put in plastic bags, just make sure to punch holes into the bag to create more room for others dropping off materials. The recycle bin is clearly labeled as to what items are acceptable. Cardboard items will not be able to be donated at this time. They include cereal and soda cartons, tissue products, plastic, glass, food wraps and containers.
The bin will be emptied every two weeks and a second bin will be added in the event it becomes full before the scheduled pick up time. Do your part to save the animals and the earth by making every page count and help the Houston SPCA recycle today.
