The Houston SPCA is currently seeking candidates for the position of Animal Cruelty Investigator. This individual will respond to calls involving suspected and known cases of animals being treated cruelly within Harris County and the seven surrounding counties. The primary schedule of an Animal Cruelty Investigator is during the day; however, an on call rotation is scheduled for emergency response after hours.
The Animal Cruelty Investigator also assists the Houston SPCA in running animal rescue calls when needed, which involves the rescue of injured strays and transportation to the Houston SPCA for care. Response to cruelty reports or rescue calls includes investigating cases of animal cruelty independently in areas of diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
Applicant must be able to maintain a productive investigative case load and maintain accurate case records. The Animal Cruelty Investigator will take a leading role in an investigation in an effort to discover, document, collect, compile and prepare evidence for use in both civil and criminal court cases. The Animal Cruelty Investigator will work with governmental authorities in enforcing Texas laws related to animals by providing investigations, testimony within the judicial system and educating the public about animal cruelty and the law.
Requirements include a valid Texas driver’s license, a clean driving record and must be insurable under the Houston SPCA’s automobile insurance policy and a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or Animal Science and/or basic knowledge of and experience with domestic animal behavior and effective animal handling techniques.
